We are searching for an experienced 2IC to assist us on the operation of a 900 cow dairy farm for the season commencing 1st June 2026. Farm description: - 54 bale rotary, ACR's, auto draft - 950 cows peak milk - system 2 farm system - 285ha effective, flat to rolling, forestry conversion - OAD from Christmas onward - roster 8:2 Farm is a forestry conversion completed in the 2000’s so infrastructure is all fairly modern and highly functional. Farm is in the district of Tirohanga, approximately 35mins to Taupo or Tokoroa, 40mins to Rotorua. Modern 3 bedroom house is available for the successful applicant. Cows are wintered on. Pasture based system with some palm kernel and grass silage in feed deficit. Fert is spread via contractor. About the role: We require a keen and enthusiastic person to assist us with running the farm day to day. Tasks you are required to complete include but are not limited to; milking, feeding out, setting up break fences, weed control and general farm maintenance. As a 2IC we would expect the successful candidate additionally to be able to ‘run’ the farm in the planned absence of the manager and carry out a share of night checks over calving. Running the farm would be to simply follow a pre arranged grazing plan and making sure all the routine tasks and work are completed. You will be working closely with the manager and for part of the year a junior staff member. However there will be many times where you will be working unsupervised so you must be comfortable and competent with that. What we are looking for in the ideal candidate: - Great attitude and passion for the industry - Solid skill set of animal husbandry and practical dairy farm experience (1-2 years minimum). - Someone comfortable working by themselves unsupervised. - Solid background in dairy hygiene with particular focus on udder health and achieving great SCC results. - Someone committed to farm pride and maintaining a safe and tidy workplace. **Job Description** * We are not accredited employers! All applicants must currently live in NZ and be eligible to work here and have the ability to come for an in person interview if required. Due to family circumstances our amazing 2IC has informed us that she will be concluding her full time farming position with us to focus more on helping her whanau which we totally understand. So now we will be on the look out to fill some pretty big shoes but I am confident the right person is out there. The full time position will be available from March onwards but we are not in a big rush and are willing to wait until the end of season if needed/preferred. **The ideal applicant will have:** - A minimum of 5 years full time NZ dairy farming experience. - A keen eye for animal health and be competent in dealing with metabolic issues, lame feet, calving cows etc. - Physically fit and competent in riding 2 wheelers as the position comes with a Ag200 as your main transportation. - Confident in operating a tractor around hilly to rolling terrain. - Excellent shed hygiene with a calm and quiet manner in the cowshed and around stock. - A team player who is happy to work unsupervised and can also manage junior staff/casual staff to ensure tasks are completed properly. - Can interact with contractors and the farm owner in a polite and respectful manner. - Can enjoy a good laugh and a bit of friendly banter at work. - Genuinely enjoys milking cows and being a Dairy farmer. **In return we offer:** - An excellent salary package. - An average of 45 hours/week. - A great roster to ensure a decent work life balance. (6 and 1 from mid July to mid November), (then 7 and 1, 4 and 2) for the rest of the milking season to ensure you get every fortnight weekend off, but also get a full day off in between so no one has to work longer than 7 days without a break. - The on-farm accommodation is a spacious 2 bedroom apartment which is an old woolshed that has been renovated, a double carport, heat pump and a stand-alone fireplace. - We utilize the pay sauce app to keep track of everyone's timesheets, pay slips, leave etc. **Now a bit about the farm:** - 500 Friesian Cross cows. - Contour is Hilly to rolling. - 44 aside Herringbone (roughly 11 and a half rows). - Auto cup removers. - Auto plant wash (C200 system). - 2 man shed at all times except calving where we have 3 in shed to help with colostrums. - Twice a day milking from calving in mid July to early Feb, (cups on at 5.30am and 3pm) then we move to a 3 in 2 system for the rest of the season. (Cups on are 6am/6pm/12pm over 2 days.) - You will be working alongside us (contract milkers) and our Farm assistant.
