This is a newly created role, but our vision is to bring someone on board who may have a couple of months experience under their belt but is extremely serious about growing a career in the dairy industry. However, in return we do expect the person that works with us to take the role seriously. Dairy farming is not for the faint hearted as we have early starts and can have quite long days (especially during calving), so to be successful you must have a very strong work ethic, you must be reliable, honest, trustworthy and most importantly have a bright personality and a positive can-do attitude. We have a Dairy Farm Assistant position available on an 520-cow farm in the Fairlie area, milking through a 40 Aside Herringbone shed. Experience is preferred but not required for this role. You'll have a range of duties to keep you busy, interested and developing including: - Milking twice a day - Shifting cows and feeding - Fencing, weed control - Calving, calf rearing - Shed cleaning and setup - Identifying and alerting managers to sick cows - Setting fences - Other general farm duties. Weekly hours are a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 45. Since farm work is dependent on a number of unknown factors like weather and animals, any hours worked beyond the agreed maximum in a fortnightly pay period will be paid at the agreed overtime rate. The schedule may vary; Roster will be 6 days on, 2 days off during calving season and 6 days on, 1 day off; 4 days on, 3 days off on a fortnight rotation for the rest of the year. Wage is between $25.00 to $30.00 per hour. Candidates are required to provide good related references. With a Farm Manager moving between the two farms + Contract milker working between the 2 properties where needed. The Farm Located on the South side of the Rangitata river, the farm is 15min to Temuka, 30 min to Timaru or Ashburton. With a local kindergarten only 5 min away and good local rural schooling available – Winchester Rural. The farm has 670 cows and boasts a 36 ASHB shed with Protrack and auto drafting, Auto teat spray, New silos and snapchill glycol chilling, Yard wash, Top and bottom gates, Ai Races, Side yards with lame crushes, In Shed feeding. Irrigation across the farm consists of Rotoraieners, K lines, Standard and Lateral Pivots with VRI where needed. Water sources are mainly bore pumped with some river access when not on restrictions. You will work closely with the Farm Unit Manager and the Farm Assistant in the team of 3 on Siberia, and sometimes also as part of the larger farm team. Cows are equipped with Allflex collars to support heat detection, animal health monitoring and overall herd management. Milking is through a modern 60-bale rotary fitted with ACR, auto wash, teatwand, Dataflow, and in shed feeding for grain and blend feeds. This role could be suitable for a herd manager looking to progress in the industry or an already accomplished 2IC looking to further their skills in the industry. You will need to be already residing in NZ and be a resident. The farm is well-equipped with modern infrastructure, cow shed is positioned in the middle with 2 herds. Milfos- 60 bail milking shed with ACR, automatic teat spray, protract drafting system and Alflex collars. This is a high input system with a feed pad on farm. We have pivots and fixed grid irrigation in the corners with a few sprinkles. We are looking for a honest and reliable person to join our team of 3. We are milking 620 cows on a 40 aside herringbone shed. Roster will be single rotation, 6 on 2 off. The farm is located in Dunsandel area, 15 minutes to Rolleston. Great location as it is on the thriving and fastest growing district of New Zealand, Selwyn District. As 2ic you will be required to work along aside the contract milker and assist in managing the day-to-day running of the farm which includes taking charge when the contract milker is off farm. Taking a leadership role around the staff and good communication are important. Other tasks include milking, animal husbandry and feeding, farm walks, operating the tractor and roto rainer, and other farm maintenance. A good attitude and understanding of the day to day work on the farm is a must. You must be proactive at work. Minimum of 3 years NZ dairy farming experience is required. **Job Description** What we are looking for We are seeking a reliable and motivated Farm Assistant for the 2026/27 season. This role works under the Assistant Manager and 2IC and will support them with the day-to-day running of the farm. There will also be additional staffing for part of the year to support calving and mating. On farm staff will also be supported by the Sharemilkers, who will not be on the farm full time. Our priorities are strong pasture management, running an efficient and well-organised system, and excellent animal health. We aim to be proactive rather than reactive, planning to achieve consistent and sustainable results.
