Experienced Farm Assistant (NZers only)

We're looking to add another reliable and trustworthy Farm Assistant to our team, pretty much immediately. Our junior staff member has moved on to his next step, which has created a vacancy in our team. We are milking 600 cows twice-a-day (TAD) starting in mid-August, and will reduce this to once-a-day (OAD) in summer sometime. The dairy shed is spacious and modern; well-equipped with ACRs, in-shed feeding, SmartWash, and a hydraulic backing gate. The other gear on the farm is well maintained and fit-for-purpose. A private bedroom in 1 of our 2 on-farm accommodations will be made available to the successful applicant. This is to be a service tenancy made available as shared accommodation for the Farm Assistant to occupy with other Farm Assistants. Both homes are warm & dry & modern. They also have stunning views of Mount Ruapehu. Each home is supplied with basic furnishings. NO PETS ALLOWED, please do not ask. NO SMOKING OR VAPING in or near the accommodation or farm equipment & buildings. We'd prefer candidates with dairy-industry experience, but are willing to train a candidate with the right attitude and mindset. This position is ideally suited for a physically & mentally fit person who is quite comfortable working OUTSIDE, in all sorts of weather conditions. This candidate should ideally be someone who has SOME animal husbandry/stock handling experience, an excellent attitude, keen attention to detail. This position requires the ability to work as a team and a tremendous willingness to learn. This position requires a person with time management skills and a person that can keep pace with the rest of the team. Farm Assistant duties include: - Milking; - Animal health & treatment; - Help with record keeping; - Stock handling and feeding; - Fencing & temporary fencing (break fencing); - Weed control; - Effluent application (irrigator); - Basic farm, shed, & machinery maintenance and preparation; - Basic tractor driving; - Quad bike driving; - Other general farm duties. We are small family owned and operated dairy farm with 450 jersey cows looking for our next permanent full-time Farm Assistant. Our farm is located in the Canterbury foothills in Mount Somers which is 20 minutes from Methven and 30 minutes to Ashburton and we milk twice daily through a 40 aside herringbone cowshed with grain feeders, auto cup removers and auto teat spray. You will work as part of team to complete daily jobs of milking (twice daily), moving stock, setting up paddocks, tractor work, spraying, moving k-lines for effluent as well as general maintenance and cleaning. During this time of year we are moving stock on winter crops at the run off and doing maintenance jobs. We would prefer someone with at least one year experience. We run a 11 days on and 3 days off roster so you generally get second Saturday, Sunday and Monday off. Accommodation is available in the township which is a 2 minute drive from the farm. Calf Rearer Required, Full Responsibility Role We are looking for an experienced and reliable calf rearer to take full responsibility for our calf-rearing season. This is a drive-in, drive-out role. We are located in Ohaupo, within approximately 15 minutes of both Cambridge and Te Awamutu. The role will run from 1 July through to 1 October, on an 11 days on, 3 days off roster. We are calving 285 cows, with approximately 140 calves reared through to weaning. This role involves taking full responsibility for the day-to-day running of the calf shed. Main duties include calf feeding, general calf shed management, monitoring calf health, keeping calves clean, dry and well-bedded, helping collect calves, navel spraying, managing calf groups, cleaning feeding equipment, maintaining calf records, and communicating clearly with the farm owners. Applicants must be confident operating a side-by-side and comfortable helping collect calves as required. The successful person will need to be reliable, observant, organised, calm around animals, and confident working independently. Previous calf-rearing experience is preferred. We're looking for someone for a 2IC assistant manager role due to our current 2IC progressing to a management role in the industry, after over two year with us. Start date negotiable anytime between July and November. This is a permanent position with your own accommodation provided on-farm. Your position will consist of helping the herd owner/ farm manager operate the farm on day to day basis and leading the operation of the farm when the manager isn’t present.
