Experienced Operator

We are looking for an experienced person who can work well as part of a team and by themselves. This is a sole charge and fixed term position. Start date will be 1st of August to approximately 1st of October earlier start possible to negotiate. Key attributes we are looking for is someone with excellent attention to detail - can pick up sick calves quickly, makes sure animal welfare is priority, has great calfshed/gear hygiene and is physically fit. Main jobs include: - Making sure each calf gets gold colostrum - Teaching new calves to feed - feeding all calves twice daily - ensuring calves have clean water, meal and hay daily - keeping up with hygiene practices (cleaning calf feeders/bottles/buckets daily) - disinfection of calf pens via spraying virkon and sprinkling stalosan. We are located between Mandeville and Riversdale 15 minutes from Gore. We calve 650 cows. We aim to rear around 180 replacement heifers, sell 4 day old beefies and bobbies. All milk is pumped to each pen the only handling of buckets is gold colostrum and bobby milk. Great gear and facilities, on average 6 hours per day Drive in position. I have a small developing opportunity for a couple looking to re enter the dairy industry, extend their current dairy career or a young team looking to make a good opportunity build into a great decision. The farm is run as a system 3 unit, on the outskirts of Stratford. You will be your own boss, work to clear objectives and we will wrap around support as required. Reporting to Brendan, you will have a great opportunity to learn and develop your dairying career. The owners of this property live off farm, the property is flat to rolling in contour. With a good quality herringbone farm dairy, the farm is making good progress with lots of potential. Heifers are grazed off and weaners are grazed on, with a third party managing the weaner dry stock side of the business and their day to day feed management. The Contract Milker may need to help with drenching and tagging etc. Nitrogen application and all harvesting is completed by a local contractor. We need a strong cows and grass couple or lead who is passionate about moos and wanting to develop their dairy farming career. Our target for next season is to reach 260,000 kg milksolids, while achieving a 10% empty rate. Excellent pasture management, aided by the Aimer app, and a healthy well fed herd are important to us, as is sharing our knowledge with people wanting to grow. We seek people already based in NZ to work alongside us to achieve our goals. The key responsibilities of the role are: 1. Manage supplement quality and utilization so that we can achieve our goal of 500 kg MS/cow. 2. Manage animal health treatments. 3. Maintenance of our plant and equipment. 4. Assist in managing pasture to maximise quality and pasture eaten. Successful applicant must have proven experience in such a role, with expertise in staff management, feed budgeting, record keeping, decision making, problem solving, and communication skills. Grasslands operate dairy farms approximately 20 minutes drive from the Tokoroa township. The farms comprise of 1000 cows and we have a casual relief milking position to cover staff leave etc. The farms have large modern milking facilities with 80 bail rotary platforms and are well equipped for the number of cows milked in them. We seek an experienced 2IC or current Farm Manager to join our team in Whakamaru on 1 June 2026. You must have a minimum of five years of New Zealand dairy farming experience, and be able to provide at least two recent employment references. As the farm owners live on the farm, this vacant role has flexibility - it could suit a 2IC or a trainee Manager or an established Farm Manager. The salary package will reflect this and also includes a nice 3 bedroom house, and a roster of 5 days on and two days off (Fridays and Saturdays) right through the season. Our farm has 700 Friesian X cows through a 50 ASHB shed with ACRs and in-shed feeding, auto teat spray and Protrack. Spring calving, system 3, usually TAD until Feb then OAD until mid-May.
