We’ve got a position in our team of 4 and are keen to welcome our next Farm Assistant.
A little bit about the Farm:
- Peak 730 cows, split into 2 herds
- 50 bail rotary with automatic teat sprayer, 1 person shed most of the year
- Milk/SCC meters so no herd testing
- Afimilk collars for mating and animal health
- In shed feed plus a feed pad used year round
- Split calving - 200 cows in autumn and 530 in spring
You’ll need at least 1 year’s milking experience, as you’ll be straight into milking when you start.
We run a fair roster so everyone gets variety and reasonable time in and out of the shed. You’ll milk one herd in the morning and one in the afternoon. With plenty of variety across the day - not just milking.
What you’ll be responsible for but not limited too:
- Milking and assisting in the shed when needed
- Treating cows (lame, mastitis, down cows, working on lame cow feet an advantage also)
- Getting cows in
- Setting up break fences
- Tractor work
- General farm maintenance (fencing, water, race spraying, weed control, etc.)
- Assisting with calf rearing in autumn and spring if required
- Shifting the effluent irrigator
- Ability to ride a 2 wheeler
- Tractor skills are a big plus. We use the feed pad all year, so there’s plenty of tractor work. Training can be provided for the right person. Experience with mixer wagons, pre mowing and fertiliser spreading is an advantage.
Roster:
We’re flexible and open to finding the right fit. Currently running 6 on / 2 off and 5 on / 1 off.
Accommodation:
- 4-bedroom house
- Single car shed
- Large, fully fenced section
- Dogs negotiable (not allowed inside the house or on the farm)
What we’re looking for in you:
You’re someone who is reliable and turns up on time, takes pride in your work, and owns it if something doesn’t go to plan. You work well with others, are a genuine team player, and are always willing to lend a hand.
You’re honest, have a good sense of humour, and enjoy being part of a team that works hard but can still have a laugh. You have a positive attitude, are keen to learn and grow, and aren’t afraid to ask questions if you’re unsure.
You’re able to follow instructions well, manage your time effectively, and treat all equipment as if it were your own.
You will also need to be drug free, as a pre-employment drug test will be required.
For the right candidate there is the possibility of relief milking and assisting with calf rearing for a partner.
Start date is June 1st 2026 - with the possibility of an earlier start for the right person. We are not accredited employers, so you must already be living in NZ and hold NZ residency. Please don’t apply if this doesn’t apply to you.
If we sound like a team you would like to join, send through a cover letter and an up to date CV with a minimum 2 references to dzhfarmsltd@gmail.com or apply through Farm Sources Jobs.
