We are looking for a Unit Manager to join our team on a 840 cow farm, 54 bail Rotary, ACR, in shed feeding and Allflex Cow collars. You will need to be confident in driving a tractor with a silage wagon and mower, have at least 5 years experience, understand pasture management, take pride in your work and have good animal health practices. This role will be directly working with the Sharemilker, with opportunities to progress in the future to full management for the right person. There is an opportunity for a partner to calf rear and relief milk during the season. We offer a 7 on 2 off Roster, Warm 3 bedroom home, a great team environment to work with and competitive salary. This is a genuine second-in-charge position within a tight three-person team (Contract milker, 2IC, Shed Manager). You will be responsible for helping lead the farm and confidently managing operations on the contract milkers days off. We run a performance-focused system and take pride in maintaining high standards across animal health, pasture management, shed hygiene, and overall farm presentation. Farm location is around 45 minutes from Invercargill and 2 hours from Dunedin. Purpose of the position: Understands and takes responsibility for daily tasks such as running of the dairy, effluent management and feeding. Completes tasks with minimal supervision and can supervise and train other staff if needed. Looks for opportunities to work more effectively and efficiently to improve the business. Your role includes but not limited to: - Milking: Understands and implements efficient milking practices and keeps the farm dairy hygienic. Records health treatments and solves milk quality. - Animals: Diagnoses common ailments and treats accordingly. Competent in all aspects of calving and reproduction, e.g. observation, recording and submitted on. - Environment: Understands regulations and management of nutrients, effluent and water and their most efficient use. - People: Trains junior employees in simple skills. The farm is run in conjunction with our 600 cow dairy farm at Kauana, Centre Bush. This is an exciting role that offers real variety. We rear 150 replacements for the dairy herd, and 400 beef cross & friesian bull calves through to finishing. We also run a beef herd of 50 spring calving Charolais cows. You’ll have the skills to give our youngstock the best possible start and ensure proactive feed management to achieve target weights for all stock. Strong pasture management skills will be required. You’ll also be responsible for the day to day management of the wintering for the dairy herd and beef stock (including shifting animals on crop) so you must be a team player and enjoy working with stock. The role will also have responsibility for all day to day maintenance on the property, fencing, weed control and general farm maintenance. There is also ongoing development work to be done on part of the farm that has been recently acquired so fencing skills are a necessity. The role also has a requirement to assist with the tractor work on both properties, including cultivation, seeding, mowing, and fertiliser. You’ll need a commitment to healthy and safe work and be capable of maintaining and operating our modern equipment. You need to have high standards and keep our farm, machinery and vehicles in good order. As farm owners we’ll be on farm and hands-on. This means you need to enjoy being part of a team, sharing knowledge and skills. We’ll collaborate with you to determine the work plan and you’ll need to be comfortable taking responsibility for working independently to deliver the outcomes we agree.
