Te Tāwharau o Te Whakatōhea (TToTW), is situated in Ōpōtiki, a coastal town in the sunny Bay of Plenty. Before going through our settlement process in 2024 the Whakatōhea Māori Trust Board was established in 1952, and the Trust’s primary role was to administer the assets of the trust on behalf of its beneficiaries and in accordance with the Māori Trust Board Act 1955. Te Whakataunga o Te Raupatu Whenua Deed of Settlement was signed on Saturday 27th of May 2023, where the establishment of Te Tāwharau o Te Whakatōhea as the Post Settlement Governance Entity (PSGE) was established to receive and manage the Treaty settlement assets as well as the assets of the Whakatōhea Māori Trust Board. The Whakatōhea Dairy Farm - Te Riu o Kānapanapa is a legacy asset and was purchased with a grant given to Whakatōhea in 1946. Covering 218ha, 4km south of Ōpōtiki, the farm winters 750 cows and aims to milk 720 to peak with a production target of 290,000 kgMS, the farm has become one of the top-performing dairy farms in the Eastern Bay of Plenty for the past 5 years, and the team have achieved grade free for the last 3 years, achieving Te Tihi Level 3 – the highest Fonterra Co-operative of excellence in five areas, prosperity, environment, animals, people, and milk. The Opportunity We are seeking an experienced and motivated Farm Manager to lead the day-to-day management and long-term performance of a well-established dairy farming operation. This is a senior leadership role responsible for maximising sustainable profit through strong people leadership, sound financial and operational management, and best practice dairy farming. The successful candidate will work closely with ownership and governance to implement strategic objectives while fostering a high performing, engaged farm team. We have a role available for the upcoming 2026/27 dairy season as a Farm Manager. Due to our current manager leaving to pursue an exciting opportunity to go contract milking we are seeking a new farm manager to start next season June 1st 2026. Farm description: ~100ha of rolling to steep contour located in Atiamuri, 20 mins south of Rotorua. Spring calving herd that peak milk 300 cows through a 30 ASHB. Cows are milked TAD up to around Christmas before moving to OAD. We operate a low input system with approximately 300kg/cow of feed fed through an in-shed feeding system during early lactation and the dry period. Cows are wintered on, with pasture and palm kernel fed in paddock over this time. Young stock leave for off farm grazing after weaning 1st December and return late June. Fertiliser is spread via contractor. Tidy 4 bedroom weatherboard house with external sleep out is available for the successful applicant. About the role: We require a keen and enthusiastic person to manage the day to day operation of our dairy farm. You will be responsible for the people management of one other staff member over calving and mating. However the position will be sole-charge once the herd switches over to once-a-day with farm owners covering your time off and helping over calving and mating. Apart from regular day to day duties expected of a farm manager; other tasks worth noting would be the control of weeds into spring and summer and a weekly farm walk must be completed with a plate meter. The farm has good infrastructure, however we are always making improvements over time. We typically employ fencing professionals to repair some areas annually but you would be expected to make other general improvements under our direction when appropriate. We have some great systems in place and policy documents so we are happy to develop someone into this role; it may suit a 2IC or herd manager ready for the next step.
